Structure of the course

The course consists of 2 parts

1. Basic project management (plan-based and agile)

2. Agile leadership and Scrum (the agile mindset/values, team and collaboration, 2 perspectives: Scrum master and Product owner role)

On the course, you will not only gain knowledge about project planning and management, but also management techniques that are relevant to know as a project manager. The content of the course thus includes 3 main areas: basic project management, which gives you insight into both the plan-based and agile project management techniques, including traditional techniques for planning and managing the project’s time, scope and costs, agile management with a focus on management and facilitation of the self-managing agile team, including the agile mindset and servant leadership, and last but not least, the SCRUM method, where we go in-depth with the SCRUM method from 2 perspectives – first the Scrum master role and then the product owner role.

With the course, there is the opportunity to obtain 3 certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) ® from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) and Product Owner Certified (SPOC™) certification from SCRUMstudy.

Target group for the course

The course is aimed at anyone who works with projects or wants to work with project management in the future and would like to be strengthened in using both traditional or agile project management methods and tools.

Prerequisites: There are no requirements for prior knowledge and experience with project management.

If you choose to follow the PMP certification programme the prerequisites for the PMP exam are 3 years of project management experience

Basic Project Management

(Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®.)

The first part of the course gives you a basic introduction to project management, where the goal is to give you an insight into the application of the basic project management methods and techniques and enable you to plan and manage your own projects.

We start with the traditional plan-based approach, where you gain knowledge about how to plan and manage the project based on a traditional plan-based project life cycle – Along the way, the agile perspective is also introduced, so that you gain an understanding of when you can benefit from using agile methods rather than traditional methods.

Attending the course, you will get answers to the following questions:

What is a project (characteristics and prerequisites)
Is it worth it – The business case (cost/benefit)
Who is involved in the project? (Project organisation and stakeholders – identification, analysis and involvement)
What are the requirements? (Requirements – Business analysis)
What work packages are needed to deliver the requirements? (Work Breakdown structure WBS, scope)
How long does it take? (Scheduling – including estimation)
What are the costs (project budget – including resource consumption and staffing)
How are risks managed? (Risk identification, analysis and responseplanning)
How are changes controlled? (types of changes and impact assessment)
How do we measure progress? (Earned Value Management and Status Reporting)
How and when to communicate (communication planning and management)
How to lead the project team (leadership styles, servant/adaptive leadership)
How to combine agile and traditional approaches to project management (Hybrid methods)

Practical perspective

The focus of the course is to give you a practical understanding of how you can use the methods effectively on your own projects. On the course, we therefore work with case exercises and you will have the opportunity to try out in practice how, for example, to identify and describe the scope of the project (requirement specification), prepare a schedule, project budget, identify and analyze stakeholders, work with risk management, etc.

This part of the course extends over 3.5 weeks and is based on PMI’s certification program: Project management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). ®

The difference between the certifications is that the target group for CAPM is professionals with none or less than 3 years of project management experience while the target group for the PMP certification program are professional with 3 years or more project management experience.

When enrolling into the course the student chooses which certification program to follow.

The certifications are based on the Project Management Institute (PMI)®’s internationally recognized project management standards, which bring together international best practice techniques for planning and project management. The methods are independent of industries and are thus applied to projects in a myriad of areas — from organizational and construction projects to IT.

After completing the course, you have the opportunity to complete the PMP/CAPM certification exam, and can thus obtain an internationally recognized certificate of competence.

Agile management and the Scrum methodology

As a project manager, it is also important that you can motivate the team and support the team’s development towards self-management and high performance. In this connection, it is important to have insight into different leadership styles.

On the first part of the course, you will gain a basic insight into both traditional leadership theory, team leadership – including team development and an introduction to agile leadership (e.g. servant and adaptive leadership).

In this part of the course, we go a step further and look at the agile values, what lies in the agile mindset and principles and how to help your team work in an agile way, including building the self-managing team, strengthening transparency and collaboration, etc.

Scrum

This part of the course is built around 3 main areas.

Introduction and principles
Scrum aspekter: Organization, Business Justification, Quality, Change and Risk
Scrum processer: Initiate, Plan and Estimate, Implement, Review and Retrospect and Release

In this part of the course, you will gain in-depth knowledge of Scrum, the framework, principles, methods and the daily work as both Scrum master and product owner. The training format include presentations, discussion and exercises, several of which are practical exercises that will give you hands’on experience with the techniques.

The Scrum master has the role of facilitator for the team and is tasked with removing impediments and coaching and developing the Scrum team to be able to work with the Scrum method and follow the Scrum processes.

One of the key elements of the Scrum method is the close collaboration with the team and the customer, which ensures that the customer’s needs are always in focus.

The product owner role represents the customer in the team and has the overall responsibility for the product and for ensuring the project’s value creation. It is the Product Owner’s job to understand the stakeholders’ needs – including the business – and communicate the vision and requirements to the team. In addition, the Product Owner’s role in the team is to handle the ongoing prioritization of requirements and manage the product backlog.

The teaching is based on “A Guide to the Scrum Body of Knowledge” (SBOK™ Guide) and the focus is on the participants being able to pass the Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) and Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC)™ certification exams during or after the course

Exam format and conduct

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) ® certification
After completing the course, you have the opportunity to take the certification exam. Prerequisites for taking the exam are a completed course – There is no requirement for project management experience and as part of the course, our teachers will guide you on how to apply for PMI participation in the exam. The exam takes place online (Proctoru format) and Once you have been approved by PMI, you decide the date and time of the exam. (exam voucher lasts 12 months from PMI approval)

The CAPM exam is a “multiple choice” exam in English. There are 150 questions. The duration of the exam is 180 minutes. You need to have about 70% correct answers to pass the exam.

If you have chosen to follow the PMP certification course, you have the opportunity to apply to take the PMP exam. To be approved, you must meet the following requirements;

Documented 35 hours of training in project management (Equivalent to GBD’s PMP certification preparatory course
36 months of practical project management experience (equivalent to 3 years), if you have a level of education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or above
60 months of practical project management experience (equivalent to 5 years), if you have a level of education equivalent to a high school education or vocational education

The exam is a combination of different question types, including a multiple-choice online exam in English. There are 180 questions. The duration of the exam is 230 minutes.

Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) and Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC)™ certification exam
After the course, you have the opportunity to sit for both the Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) and Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC)™ certification exams. Both exams are in English and are “multiple choice” format

Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) There are 100 questions. The duration of the exam is 2 hours/120 minutes. You must have a minimum of 65% correct answers to pass the exam. (pass rate: 95%)
Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC):™ There are 140 questions, The duration of the exam is 3 hours/180 minutes. You must have a minimum of 65% correct answers to pass the exam. (pass rate: 95%)
